Maintain A Stable Manhaj

Praise be to Allāh; may the blessing and peace be upon the Messenger of Allāh.

To proceed:

When Sheikh Abdul-Azīz ar-Rayyis and sheikh Hamad al-‘Atīq visited us in 2009, they were both surprised at how we had come to know as-Salafiyyah. They were both willing to interview us in order to know how we had been guided to Salafiyyah despite the fact that over 90 percent of the brothers that hosted them never studied in Saudi Arabia. In fact it was only one person amongst us that was studying in Saudi Arabia then; and he was the one who facilitated their coming to Nigeria then as he would attend the halqah of sheikh ar-Rayyis. As for me, I saw sheikh ar-Rayyis once before then, precisely in 2007 in the house of sheikh Rabee’ when he paid him a visit.

Sheikh Hamad conducted the interview with the brothers at Markaz Ahlis-sunnah Wal Jamaa’at Amukoko, with most of us sharing our experiences and sojourns with him as far as our practising Islam is concerned. Some of us talked about their previous experiences with some groups and sects namely Tableeg, Ikhwān and Sufīs and how Allāh assisted them in coming out of those groups and sects.

This interview was held in 2009,i.e, two years or so before the beginning of the Arab Spring which was championed by the Ikhwānis in the Arab world. our disapproval of the manhaj of Ikhwān was only strengthened by their evil display in the so called Arab Spring which destroyed so many things in the Muslim world. And consequently the body of the Saudi senior scholars officially declared them a heretic sect in 2017.

Coincidentally, in 2017 some Saudi graduated doctors started the mission of selling the conspicuous Ikhwāni scholars in Nigeira to the Salafi youths. They wanted to incorporate us too so as to fully achieve this amalgamation . We quickly objected to this.
I was invited to a seminar in Ilorin which I later refused to honour when I saw the topic given to me; the topic had to do with the sects. I strongly believed I would not be doing justice to the topic if the Ikhwān were not included in the discussion. My declining was based on the fact that the main organiser whom I loved so much, would not want me to touch that area due to his softness in presentation which I had always admired in most cases but not in the case like that of the Ikhwān ; moreso, some of his seniors who graduated before him from Saudi Arabia are Ikhwānis whom Baba Hadiyyatullah later mistakenly exposed in a seminar in Lagos.

My topic was later given to sheikh Ibn Raaji. Sheikh AbdurRauf Ballo from our Markaz also participated as the topic originally given to our noble sheikh ustadh Murtadaa Adedokun was eventually given to him when the sheikh could not make it. I discouraged sheikh AbdurRauf Ballo from participating but he preferred to go and speak the truth. Sheikh Ibn Rāji – as he said in a seminar – prepared his lecture and submitted it to them. A day to the program he was asked to edit some areas. However, according to him due to his tight schedule he gave them the permission to do the editing. Unbeknownst to him every thing that had to do with the Ikhwān was completely removed from the paper as he later confirmed in the hard copies that were later distributed to the audience. Unfortunately for the organisers, they forgot to give him the edited copy before he started his verbal presentation. So he went ahead with the the original content of his paper where he attacked the methodology of the Ikhwān. After the presentation,he was taken up by some of the doctors present as they were not pleased with his attack on the Ikhwān.
Ustadh AbdurRauf Ballo who was to deliver the second lecture having seen the way sheikh Ibn Rāji was handled, corroborated sheikh Ibn Rāji’s statement on Ikhwān. This further left the organisers displeased. What I actually feared had happened.

Hence, the biggest error the amalgamators made is their thought that we could be easily drawn to this amalgam agenda. It would have been stupid of us wallahi to fall for such a thing. Any person who listens to sheikh Hamad’s interview with us, can know how difficult this can be.
Unfortunately, any one who also listens to the same interview will also see how some of the people who participated in the interview later swallowed their vomit particularly those with the most vehement criticism against the Ikhwān and WAMY or Sufiyyah.

Hence, it is very important that one is stable in one’s dawah; one should not allow the love of reputation and popularity determine one’s stands and position. Don’t praise Bin Laden today and tomorrow you condemn him. Don’t eulogise Boko Haram today and tomorrow you make takfeer of them. Don’t condemn Ikhwān and those who accommodate them today and tomorrow you praise and mix with them and invite them to your program. You condemned the Sufi shuyukh to the extent of takfeer and later you praised them to the extent of saying these are the people you were hoping to be like while you were young.

Maintain a stable position, lest people relate with your side that appears to them. And this undoubtedly confuses the innocent souls and set them against one another.

For someone to be upon an error and they are sincerely committed to it is less evil than someone whose manhaj is not stable. The sincere person upon error can easily change when the truth is clear to them.

And Allāh’s aid is sought.

Sitting with the Innovators (2)

Al-imām At-Tabari said:

( Alhough this verse was revealed concerning those we mentioned it was revealed about from among the people of shirk, every innovator in the deen of Allah is intended by it; he whose heart has inclined towards it, interpreating some verses of the Qur,ān that are not entirely clear and would later argue with the people of the truth using them; he would turn away from the evidences of its clear verses intending to cause confusion by that for the people of the truth who are believers and requesting to know of it what is not entirely clear to him; it does not matter whoever he is and the type of innovators he belongs; whether he is among the people of Christianity or Judaism or mazdaism or he is a Sabaean or a Haruri( Khāriji) or a Qadari or Jahmite. They are like the one that he, sallā Allāhu alayhi wa sallam, said, ‘ When you see those who argue with it, they are the ones Allāh was referring to, so avoid them “

An-Nawawi commenting on
the hadīth
“إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الَّذِينَ يَتَّبِعُونَ مَا تَشَابَهَ مِنْهُ، فَأُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ سَمَّى اللَّهُ، فَاحْذَرُوهُمْ “
( When you see those following that which is not entirely clear from it, those are the ones Allāh has mentioned; so avoid them)

said,
“وفي هذا الحديث التحذير من مخالطة أهل الزيغ وأهل البدع ، ومن يتبع المشكلات للفتنة ، فأما من سأل عما أشكل عليه منها للاسترشاد ، وتلطف في ذلك فلا بأس عليه ، وجوابه واجب ، وأما الأول فلا يجاب ، بل يزجر ويعزر كما عزر عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه صبيغ بن عسل حين كان يتبع المتشابه ، والله أعلم “

( In the hadith there is a warning against mixing with the people of deviation and innovations and those that follow ambiguities in order to cause fitnah.
As for the one who inquires about what is not clear to them in order to be guided, they gently do this, there is no harm on them; it is compulsory to answer them.
As for the first one, they should not be answered; rather they should be repremanded and and deterently punished as Umar punished Sabīg bn ‘Isl when he was following [verses] that are not entirely clear. And Allah knows best.)
Abdullah bn ‘Abbās said,

“لا تجالسوا أهل الأهواء فإن مجالستهم ممرضة للقلوب”
( Sit not with the people of desires; sitting with them certainly sickens the hearts) [al-Ibaanah]
Abu Qilaabah said,
( Sit not with the people of desires nor argue with them. Certainly I don’t rest assured that they won’t plunge you in their misguidance or confuse you on things that you know)
[al-Ibānah]

Abdullah bn ‘Awn said,
“مَنْ يُجَالِسُ أَهْلَ الْبِدَعِ أَشَدُّ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبِدَعِ”
( The one who sits with the people of innovations is more dangerous on us than the people of innovations) [al-Ibānah]

Sitting with Innovators

Praise be to Allāh the Lord of the world; may the blessing and peace be upon the noble Prophet Muhammad, SALLALLAHU ‘ALAEHI WASALLAM, his household and companions all together.

To proceed;

What I have observed in life is that the more we try to please the innovators and the idolaters, the more the compromises we make and the farther away from the true Islam we are. We should rather relate with them according to the provision of the Qur,ān and Sunnah; we shouldn’t go to the extreme and we should not be too lenient.

Allah says:
Translation of its meaning
( The Jews and the Christians shall never be pleased with you until you follow their way)
He also says:
“يأيها الذين إن تطيعوا الذين كفروا يردوكم على أعقابكم فتنقلبوا خاسرون”
Translation of its meaning:

(O you who believe! If you obey those who disbelieve, they will turn you back on heels and you will become losers)

He also says:
Translation of its meaning :

( They wish that you should compromise with them so that they can comprise with you)

The Prophet, sallā Allāhu alayhi wa sallam, also says:
“مَنِ الْتَمَسَ رِضَاءَ اللَّهِ بِسَخَطِ النَّاسِ كَفَاهُ اللَّهُ مُؤْنَةَ النَّاسِ، وَمَنِ الْتَمَسَ رِضَاءَ النَّاسِ بِسَخَطِ اللَّهِ وَكَلَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَى النَّاسِ ” الترمذي
(Whoever seeks Allāh’s pleasure at the expense of the displeasure of the people, Allah will be sufficient for him from the people. However, whoever seeks the pleasure of the people not minding the displeasure of Allah, Allāh will abandon him to the people.) At-Tirmidhi.

This, however, should not be mistaken for nicety. Islam preaches nicety to people generally as long as they do not wage war against us or declare enmity against us or assist the enemies against us.

Allāh says:
“لا ينهاكم الله عن الذين لم يقاتلوكم في الدين ولم يخرجوكم من دياركم أن تبرّوهم وتقسطوا إليهم إن الله يحب المقسطين “
Translation of its meaning

(Allah does not forbid you from being nice and just to those who do not fight you nor evict you out of your houses. Certainly Allah loves the just ones)

Asmā, may Allāh be pleased with her, said,

(My mother who was a polytheist came to me during the time of the Messenger of Allāh, sallā Allāhu alayhi wa sallam. So I asked the Messenger of Allah saying: ” My mother wants to connect me, I can I connect her? He ( the Messenger) said, ” Connect your mother.”)

Note: If her mother had wanted her to do what is haram, it would have been forbidden to obey her as we have it in the case of Sa’d bn Abi Waqqās whose mother wanted him to leave Islam and consequently she decided not to eat and drink for three days upon which she fainted. All this did not make Sa’d abadon his religion.
Allah mentions the ruling of this in the Qur,ān.

Sumarrily, pleasing the kuffar and the innovators at the expense of your deen is dangerous for you. You can’t please them except by compromises. The Prophet, sallā Allāhu alayhi wa sallam, said:
“إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الَّذِينَ يَتَّبِعُونَ مَا تَشَابَهَ مِنْهُ، فَأُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ سَمَّى اللَّهُ، فَاحْذَرُوهُمْ” رواه مسلم
( When you see those who follow the ambiguities in it ( Qur,ān) these are the ones He ( Allah) has mentioned, so avoid them)

He, sallā Allāhu alayhi wa sallam, did not say “mix with them”, rather he said, ” avoid them”

Even when you want to debate with them you ought to exercise caution, lest they influence you. Ibn Battah al-‘Ukbari mentioned in “al-Ibābah” the case of some upright people who were known to oppose the innovators, they would attack, abuse and curse them, but they later lured these upright people to their side with hidden trick and mutual smiling, although those people sat with them originally with the intention of debating with them but they were eventually won to the side of the innovators.
O Allah, make our feet firm on the path that pleases you!
