I think we shouldn’t (over)flog the issue of quoting from the books of the people of innovations; what is crystal clear is that when we quote from their books, this indirectly endears them to the hearts of the innocent Sunnis who may not have known anything about the personality qouted; in fact quoting a non Muslim to buttress an argument sometimes may be less harmful as a Sunni already knows he shouldn’t love him religiously. The unbelievers and the innovators shouldn’t be quoted except when necessary such as using it as a proof against the unbelievers or the innovators themselves; and this should be done with extra caution.
Yes, some later scholars of Sunnah from centuries back, contrary to what the Salaf would do, have been lenient with making beneficial quotes from some of the innovators. However, I don’t think they would do that during the time in which that same person or persons are seriously being warned against.
For instance, in the recent time, the senior scholars of Sunnah in Saudi Arabia and other places have been warning against the Ikhwaan and their scholars and leaders; their books have been banned from the Saudi libraries, bookshops, and removed from their curriculum etc; books of al-Qardaawi, al-Mawdudi,Sayyid Qutb, Hasan al-Banna etal, are books of persona non grata in some of the gulf countries presently, particularly Saudi Arabia, because they are books which contain incitation against the rulers. Al-Qardaawi was also excommunicated from the Muslim World League for the same reason.
Consequently, I don’t think that any scholar of Sunnah will quote al-Qardaawi at this trying period! That is why when a questioner raised before sheikh al-Fawzan that ” Fī Zhilal al-Quran” of Sayyid Qutb used to be read before in one of the stations in Saudi Arabia. Sheikh al-Fawzan said this was before they actually knew the misguidance in their books and this is buttressed by the statement of sheikh Ibn Baaz as contained in his fataawa where he acknowledged that he did not read enough of their books not even that of Hasan al-Bannaa. Sheikh Ibn Baaz was asked:
(س٢٩: تعرفون سماحتكم أن كثيرا من المؤلفات المدرسية ساهم في تأليفها عدد من الإخوان المسلمين منذ الستينات، فهل يتوجب إعادة طباعة ودراسة هذه المؤلفات المدرسية؟
ج٢٩: لا أعرف عنها شيئا، ولأنني مشغول لم أقرأها، أسمع عن دعوة الإخوان المسلمين، وعدم نشاطهم فيما يتعلق بالعقيدة، ولكني لم أقرأ قراءة كافية في كتبهم وما جمعوا، لا من جهة الشيخ حسن – يرحمه الله – ولا غيره.)

(Ouestion 29: Your eminence know that a number of al-Ikhwaan al-Muslimun contributed to the authoring of many of the school books from the sixties; is it obligatory to reprint and restudy these books?
Answer 29: I do not know anything about them [ books] because I was busy and didn’t read them. I only hear about the dawah of al- Ikhwaan al-Muslimun and their inaction in aqeedah related matters. However, I didn’t read enough of their books and what they have gathered, not on side of sheikh Hasan, may Allāh have mercy on him, nor other than him) [ Volume 8/ pages 41-42]
In addition to what sheikh al-Fawzan said, it is established that most of those institutions and establishments were later headed by those Saudi citizens trained by the original Ikhwaani asylum seekers given employments by the Saudi authorities out of mercy for them, not knowing that they were honouring and harbouring those that would later work against them. Hence, it was those early ikhwaani ayslum seekers and their boys recommended those books written by their leaders which dominated were commonplace in the Kingdom then.
